ASE recently completed multiple surveys based on the task lists for all tests in the automobile series. The surveys focused on the repair tasks that automotive service professionals perform most frequently in each of the test categories (A1-A9). Results from the surveys will be used to guide and update content of automobile series task lists and tests in the near future.
“As an industry created and directed organization, ASE depends upon the industry for input and guidance. We want to thank all the automotive service professionals who took the time to share their thoughts about various service and repair tasks,” said Matt Shepanek, vice president, Credential Testing Programs for ASE. “Because test questions and task lists are developed and written by automotive trainers and subject matter experts from independent repair shops, dealers, aftermarket suppliers and OEMs, the responses to these surveys provide valuable input and help drive ASE certification standards and technical training.”
Over 36,000 survey responses were received covering such topics as engine repair, automotive parts, automatic transmission, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, manual drivetrain and axles, brakes, suspension and steering, light vehicle diesel engines, and heating and air conditioning.
Using a five-point scale, the automotive service professionals rated how often they performed various tasks from the ASE task lists. After compiling the results, ASE has conducted multiple workshops with subject matter experts from across the industry to evaluate the findings.
Based on survey results, adjustments are being made to two tests in the automotive series: the Engine Repair (A1) and the Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (A2) certification tests. These adjustments will take effect in January 2026. ASE will review the remaining survey results and plans to adjust other tests as needed in the near future. In addition, ASE will conduct future surveys to gain insights for the Medium-Heavy Truck (T1-T8) series certification tests.
